Removing Turbidity from Drinking Water

Turbidity isn’t just a clarity problem — particles shield microorganisms from disinfection and trip compliance limits. Removing turbidity from drinking water effectively means capturing a wide range of particle sizes without choking your flow.

Why Turbidity Fights Back

Turbidity is a mix: silt, clay, organic fines and biological matter, much of it far smaller than a grain of sand. A single coarse filter barely dents it; a single fine filter clogs immediately. The answer is staged removal.

The Staged Approach

  • Cyclonic separation — Hurricane® up-flow housings drop the dense fraction (sand, grit, scale) before any media loads
  • Depth pre-filtration — 20–50 micron pleated cartridges capture bulk silt
  • Absolute-rated polish — 1 micron absolute media, such as Harmsco pleated microglass cartridges, takes turbidity down to disinfection-ready clarity ahead of UV or chlorination

Certified for Drinking Water

Every stage should be NSF/ANSI/CAN Standard 61 listed — as all Harmsco municipal filtration equipment is. Stainless construction, ASME design and swing-bolt service access keep operators happy for decades, whether the system serves a rural well or a regional utility.

Removing turbidity from drinking water is a solved problem with the right stages in the right order. Contact Harmsco with your turbidity readings and flow — our team will design the treatment train, made in the USA since 1958.
