Cause 1: The Filter Is Doing a Separator’s Job
Sand and grit shouldn’t die on your cartridge. They’re dense enough to remove by cyclonic action — which is exactly what Harmsco Hurricane® up-flow housings do, spinning heavy solids into a purgeable chamber before the media sees them. Operators routinely see cartridge life multiply after adding cyclonic pre-separation.
Cause 2: Too Little Media Area
A small string-wound element loads and blinds quickly. Pleated high-area cartridges — up to 75 sq. ft. per Harmsco Hurricane cartridge — hold several times the dirt at the same micron rating, stretching change-out intervals accordingly.
Cause 3: Wrong Micron Strategy
Jumping straight to a fine cartridge makes it catch everything, fast. Stage coarse-to-fine (for example 50 micron → 5 micron → 1 micron absolute) so each stage handles the fraction it’s best at.
Cause 4: Undersized Housings
Flow forced through too little filter means high velocity, deep particle penetration and early blinding. Harmsco stainless housings scale to 2,400 GPM so the system can breathe at peak demand.
